Limiting free radical damage to your skin
Unfortunately, free radicals are an inevitable part of being alive. These are simply by-products created by the natural human processes of breathing and eating. They are molecules with unpaired electrons that attempt to bind to other cells throughout the body, thereby causing cell damage and death. Many scientists believe that free radicals are the main reason behind the physical appearance of ageing, so to tackle wrinkles and ageing skin, it’s important to target the free radicals as the cause.
So if free radicals are caused by simply being alive, what can we do to limit their damaging effects? Firstly, diet is important. The body fights free radicals with a natural system known as superoxide dismutase (SOD), but this process is supported by antioxidants such as vitamin C and E. If you make sure you consume a high amount of antioxidants in your diet, it follows then that you’ll be supporting your body’s own natural defence mechanism and fighting that free radical damage.
Green tea, blueberries and the fruit of the coffee plant are great sources of antioxidants, so make sure you try and get some of these in your diet (you can get the antioxidant power of the coffee plant simply by drinking coffee made from its beans – you don’t have to actually eat the coffee fruit).
However, for extra skin protection, it’s a good idea to use a product that penetrates the surface of your skin and allows antioxidants to do their work at the direct site of potential free radical damage. That is why you’ll see a lot of products on the shelf nowadays that contain such ingredients as green tea. The Priori skin care range utilises the fruit of the coffee berry, which has actually been proven to have many more times antioxidant power than green tea, and therefore to be one of the most powerfully antioxidant substances on earth.
